Impacts of Deepfakes

What is it? 

Deepfake technology is made from Artificial intelligence which generates highly realistic images, videos, recordings etc which manipulates the existing media by replacing it by a different one.( TechTarget N.D 2024 ) 

Positive impacts 

1.Creative - this helps in creating a whole new level of creativity in lot of fields like the film industry , music and art 

2. Education and training - this teaches us about history , language and communication which makes it easier for learning or training. 

3.Communication and Learning - this gives us personalized content where virtual assistants also help and communicate with us. 

4. Entertainment - this gives us realistic characters with a immersive story which allows us to change there avatars as per our wish 

5.Mental Health and Therapy - we can use it as our therapist virtually which is accessible and helps with their insecurities etc (Wisdom Wiz 2023) 

Negative impacts 

1.Misinformation - this can manipulate the public opinion into some other opinion 2. Privacy concern - this leads to featuring individuals without their consents 3. Identity theft - this leads to invasion of privacy and consent of the individual 4.Mental health issues - because of this people fall into depression and face may other mental health issues (HP N.D 2024) 

How to detect it? 

1.Number of flashes- paying attention to the number of light sources and since it is AI it often looks more unnatural or forced 

2.Face and Body - since this takes a lot of work pay attention to their face expressions etc because sometimes you can find the different proportions of body 3.Video length and sound - since it takes a lot of time they usually make is only a few seconds long and not a whole video 

4.Inside mouth -AI is not very good at creating mouth, teeth etc and often makes it more unrealistic (Telefonica 2023)
