Introduction

Uniform use in schools has increased significantly over the past 20 years, transitioning from being seen as something for private schools to becoming more known to the public. Over time the adoption of uniforms has expanded by 12 percent with 22 percent of public schools requiring the use of a uniform. Despite these changes, many have voiced their opinion. Students suggest that they should be allowed to express themselves at school, arguing that having uniforms limits their ability to showcase their creativity and identity through clothing.

Benefits of School Uniforms

On the other hand, schools advocate for uniforms to promote various benefits Researchers argue that uniforms can lead to discipline among students especially boys, reducing gang-related styles and logos. Uniforms also allow students from low-income households to not worry about the burden of picking out new clothes every day and minimize socioeconomic distinctions amongst students.

Challenges and Controversies

However, while this might be true parents still find themselves struggling with the cost and effort of finding the required uniforms. Despite many of the reported benefits, many find the idea controversial.

Empirical Evidence

A study conducted by a large urban school district in the southwest United States explores the effects of uniforms on student behavior, and achievement and found that uniform adoption improves attendance in secondary grades and Increases significantly in elementary school

leading to teacher retention (Gentile, Elizabetta; Imberman, Scott A. Journal of Urban Economics, 2012). This suggests the many ways uniforms can positively impact both student behavior and school operations, yet the issue remains

Conclusion

To conclude, school uniforms offer many benefits, such as improving discipline and reducing economic distinctions. However, they can be seen as limiting for those who wish to express themselves through clothing, highlighting the need to balance these benefits with the importance of personal expression.
